Things Head South

Hola! We write to you from Tijuana (sorry, moms!).

It seemed like a great idea to visit, and it was, until we ventured back to the border crossing. When we crossed into Mexico earlier this morning there was no line in either direction. We only spent a couple hours touring the city, and to our dismay, there’s now a line seemingly half the length of the PCT. Good thing we filled our bellies with Mexican street food while we were wandering about! Delicioso!

We were a little leery of visiting Tijuana just because it tops the “worlds most dangerous cities” chart. But we stayed in the touristy and populated areas and felt incredibly safe the whole time. However, we were only there for a few hours, in broad daylight, plus we visited on the Lord’s day. Please don’t use our peaceful experience as any sort of factor in your own decision to visit Tijuana.

Yesterday we landed in San Diego around 10am local time. Despite being exhausted from our 3am wake-up (midnight in San Diego), we took on a 10 mile self guided walking tour, powered by excitement for our trip and possibly a little Cali-grade Sativa. We saw all the sites and ate our weight in burritos - JV’s is a must next time you’re in San Diego (thanks for the rec, Rico Mayers)! We might gorge ourselves there again today if we make it back from Mexico before they close up shop.

And then we laid in bed and watched the tele, fighting to stay awake until an appropriate bedtime. We didn’t make it. We were both dead to the world before the sun fully set.

Tomorrow we’ll get up bright and early to travel to Campo, CA - home to the Southern Terminus of The Pacific Crest Trail. After we arrive in Campo, we’ll swing by the local Post Office to send ourselves a small resupply box. Then we’ll hitch or walk to the start of the trail and take our first steps on the PCT.

We’re so friggen pumped to start humping north!
